46: Corinne Chun - Hawaiian Education & Teach for America
WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST
Corinne Chun is an educator, a Teach for America alum, and an Oregon State Beaver! Craig and Corinne get to catch up after a few years of being separated by oceans and life so talk about the world of education from the perspective of someone who grew up in Hawaii. Corinne chronicles her early days coming up through the education system on the island, while discussing the motivations to experience college on the mainland - at Oregon State University, where the two were RAs together!
Corinne is also an alum of the Teach for America program, which gives people the opportunity to build a more equitable future through educating students in high-risk communities. While most folks enter the program from carious fields - often not from an education background, Corinne DID have an education background and teaching certification already. After all, Craig and Corinne went through the same Education Double-Degree program at Oregon State together, so they had many classes together and on this episode, they definitely reminisce about those days.
There's a lot to learn in this episode! Enjoy!
ADVERTISING NOTES:
- This week we hyped up No More Deaths (No Mas Muertes), which is an organization that is incredibly important right now with the bullshit going on at the US/Mexico Border.
- No More Deaths is a humanitarian organization based in southern Arizona. The group began in 2004 as a coalition of community and faith groups, dedicated to stepping up efforts to stop the deaths of migrants in the desert and to achieving the enactment of a set of Faith-Based Principles for Immigration Reform.
- The group is utilizing volunteers who hike through the desert trails and leave water, food, socks, blankets, and other supplies. Under the direction of our medical team, volunteers provide emergency first-aid treatment to individuals in distress.
- Finally, No More Deaths is currently working on legal defense projects for folks migrating into America, while also documenting the abuse and human rights violations that occur while being detained by US Border Patrol.
- Please consider donating (either money, supplies, or time) to No More Deaths - No Mas Muertes today!
